‘Sleeper’ Date $20 Saint-Gaudens Uncovered

March17 Spotlight F

MS64 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle

As many of you know, we’ve issued a strong buy recommendation for the MS64 $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. This big, beautiful and historic coin is one of the best values in U.S. coins – if not one of the very best ways to own gold. The spread between fair market value and melt value has never been so small, thus creating a fantastic opportunity for savvy investors.

Although the MS64 $20 Saints offered such a great value, we were certain there was more value to be found. Our experts searched the market of over 50 different issues in the $20 Saint-Gaudens series to find undervalued dates. From there, we discovered a group of hidden Saints that were 35x times rarer than the “generic” date, yet they were only selling for just 10% more!

If you’re going to own MS64 Saints right now, these eight dates in the series represent the very best value considering how scarce these dates are.

$20 Saints Historical Price Overview and Scarcity

March17 Spotlight 1911 Slabbed FThe $20 Saint-Gaudens series contains both readily available dates and extremely rare coins. Mintages and survival rates vary tremendously year to year. In addition, one tiny mintmark can make an incredible difference in value.

For example, in 1927, the Philadelphia Mint issued an enormous number of $20 Double Eagles. Their output was over 2.9 million coins. The same year, the Denver Mint struck 180,000 coins - all but a roll or two were melted. As a result, the 1927 $20 is readily available and sells for $1,500-$1,750 in Uncirculated. The 1927-D, meanwhile, is a major rarity. One sold for just shy of $2 million in 2014!

The takeaway message is that dates and mintmarks absolutely matter in the $20 Saint series.

As a general rule, the Saints of 1910-1923 tend to be scarcer than the 1924-1928 Philadelphia issues. Firstly, the mintages are considerably lower. Their output levels were in the hundreds of thousands instead of the millions. Secondly, the later dates were more likely to be sent overseas (and therefore shielded from the 1933 gold recall). Most, if not all, of the 1910-1923 issues were in general circulation when the Executive Order was issued.

NGC population reports confirm this phenomenon. The eight dates we have identified are on average 35x scarcer than the most available date (the 1924 Philadelphia), and in some cases, are dozens of times rarer. Simply put, these eight dates are in a completely different rarity class.

Not long ago, these rare dates were sold for $2,000+ per coin and often hovered around $2,500.

For ASI readers, these limited number of rare dates are available to you at $1,725 per coin*. This price point is truly remarkable in three different ways:

  1. The premium over melt is essentially half its historic peak. Instead of selling for $1,000+ over the spot price of gold, these eight dates can be had for just $500 or so over spot.
  2. The premium over the “generic” $20 Saint price is less than 10%. You’re getting a coin that’s 35x rarer on average than the most common issue for an extremely modest 10% premium.
  3. Given how pricey MS65 specimens are, MS64s are extremely attractive to collectors. Furthermore, the wide spread to MS65 gives the MS64s “room to run.” Dates like the 1923, for instance, jump from an NGC Price Guide value of $2,125 in MS64 to $4,500 in MS65.

March17 Spotlight 1922 Slabbed FWe acquired a cache of these ‘Sleeper’ date Saints at extremely favorable pricing. Orders of five or more coins will receive coins from three different mints: Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco, giving you an instant mintmark set! These were the only three mints to produce the $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle.

These eight dates are the absolute best buys in the series, if not in all of United States gold. For a 10% premium over the generic price, you’re getting a truly rare coin that usually carries a much larger price tag.
