Following the minting of the gold Britannia, the silver version of this coin was first minted in 1997. The collecting and investment value of these coins are enhanced by their limited minting numbers; only issued as proof coins with a population of 20,000 minted in 1997.
The Royal Mint's silver Britannias, are backed by the British Government and have a face value of £2. From 1998-2012 they were made of .958 fine silver. Later coins contained .925 fine silver, and, starting in 2013, were minted as .999 fine.
