Gold South African Krugerrand coins were intended to be used as currency in South Africa, therefore they are made of an alloy, known as crown gold, a durable mix of 22k (.9166) gold and copper. This lends the coins their distinctive rich color durability that bullion coins of higher purity often lack.
The Krugerrand was so successful, that it inspired other countries to mint legal tender gold bullion, such as the U.S. Gold Eagle and the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf.
- Obverse: Features the likeness of Paul Kruger, a past President of South Africa, and the words ‘South Africa’ in Afrikaans and English.
- Reverse: The national animal of South Africa, the Springbok Antelope, as well as the minting year and gold weight.
